| | | The Exoplanet Naming Society has been created! | Sun Nov 23, 2008 7:30 am by Zurack | Today the Exoplanet Naming Society has been created!
Extrasolar Planets usually have the name of their host star, with a lowercase letter after it, starting with b for the first planet found in the system (51 Pegasi b). The next planet found in the system is labeled with the next letter of the alphabet (Gliese 876 c).
The problem with this system is that most stars have weird letter and numbers combinations as names, who is going to say "The planet OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb is pretty cool!"?
The International Astronomical Union (The official "Naming Society") is not planning on naming Extrasolar Planets with the names they deserve, because "it is impractical". Yes, it is impossible to name more than 300 planets in 1 day. But if we work together we can do it! That is why we created this Society!
There is currently only 3 Extrasolar Planets with "friendly" names, but they are not official, Osiris (HD 209458 b), Bellerophon (51 Pegasi b) and Methuselah (PSR B1620-26 b). They were not created by the Exoplanet Naming Society.
We will start with notable and famous Extrasolar Planets, and if we finish naming them, we can move on to the rest of the Extrasolar Planets!
This Society is not official, but if it becomes popular, people will start to use the unofficial names frequently.
Create an account, read the exoplanet naming guidelines, and name those planets!
